Twenty years ago, we first boarded the train to Hogwarts in theaters with the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Now the Harry Potter cast is back in an HBO reunion special.
“It has been an incredible journey since the debut of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone film, and witnessing how it has evolved into this remarkable interconnected universe has been magical to say the least,” Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. global kids, young adults, and classics, said in a statement to Variety. “This retrospective is a tribute to everyone whose lives were touched by this cultural phenomenon—from the talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into this extraordinary film franchise to the passionate fans who continue to keep the Wizarding World spirit alive 20 years later.”
On Wednesday, December 8, a photo from the reunion featuring the trio of Daniel Radcliffe (Harry), Rupert Grint (Ron), and Emma Watson (Hermione) talking in the Gryffindor common room was released, and it’s giving us all the feels. Literally all of them.
A second teaser, released December 5, shows a few cast members receiving invitations to the event, then heading to platform 9¾ to hop aboard the Hogwarts Express.

Here’s everything we know so far.
When’s the special premiering?
The special, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, is set to premiere at midnight on New Year’s Day 2022, so you can head to platform 9¾ as soon as the ball drops.
Who’s coming back?
Our main wizarding trio, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, will all be in attendance. Other returning members of the Harry Potter cast include fan favorites Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange) and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), plus Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge), James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), and Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), to name a few.
What will be discussed?
Per Variety, the retrospective special promises to “tell an enchanting making-of story through all-new in-depth interviews and cast conversations, inviting fans on a magical first-person journey” through the franchise. The special was apparently filmed on the original sets of Hogwarts, so wands crossed for a House Gryffindor reunion in the main hall!
