At some point in the recent past, owning a really great hair dryer became a need instead of a want. Maybe it’s because using a hair dryer can lead to dry, rough hair with loss of hair color (1). Maybe it’s because gray hair can turn brassy (or yellowish) from heat exposure (2). Maybe it’s because I was sick of all my hair dryers crapping out.

Or maybe it’s because my friend Jessica has one and now I want one too.

Whatever the reason, all I know is that I was ready to put the best hair dryer ever, the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, to the test.

My Dyson Supersonic hair dryer review

Generally speaking, I wash my hair two times a week. Sometimes I’ll let my hair air dry, but most of the time I will blow it out. My hair is long, thick and wavy so I can either dry it straight or diffuse it for a fun wave.

Out of the shower, I usually towel it up to absorb and excess water and then I hit it with my #1 styling product, EVOLVh’s SuperFinish Polishing Balm. This helps to smooth, hydrate and protect hair and I never dry my hair without it. If I’m going to diffuse my hair, I layer SuperFinish Polishing Balm and then a little Inner Peace Whipped Creme Texturizer to help protect and define my waves.

Which Dyson hair dryer attachments I use

When I bought my Dyson Supersonic back in 2018, it came with three attachments. Now it comes with these five:

Flyaway Attachment (new) – hides flyaways under longer hairs for that sleek look.Wide-tooth Comb (new) – to help create volume, shape and length for textured hair.Gentle Air Attachment (new) – provides a gentler, cooler air flow that’s best for fine hair and sensitive scalps.Diffuser – simulates natural drying and helps define curls and waves.Styling Concentrator – aims air in one specific direction. Best for a straight blowout.

Nine times out of ten I use the Styling Concentrator and that’s it. However, I do have wavy hair so I appreciate the diffuser which helps define my waves plus keep them from frizzing out.

How long it takes to dry my hair with the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer

I really wanted to put a hard number on this, so I timed my last blowout. For this experiment I washed my hair, toweled it up for exactly six minutes while I lotioned up and got dressed and then blew my hair out. With the Dyson hair dryer, drying my hair took seven minutes.

How does the Dyson hair dryer compare to other hair dryers?

In the past I’ve owned some sort of version of the Kiss Pro Tourmaline Ceramic Blow Dryer and before that it was some rando Conair.

What really stands out to me about the Dyson hair dryer compared to others is it dries my hair in about half the time—and I never get that burned hair smell.

I also really like the magnetic attachments. In the past, I’ve dropped my hairdryer and cracked the diffuser screw part and was instantly SOL with no diffuser attachment anymore. Or sometimes the screw-in part of an attachment becomes threadbare and no longer attaches. I specifically remember duct taping one of my attachments to my old hair dryer. That didn’t work so well. But with the Dyson magnetic attachments, those things won’t happen. It’s attachments for life y’all.

I have had the attachment fall off during a blow dry, but it’s no big deal to just pop it back on.

Best hair dryer for gray hair

The Dyson Supersonic is the best hair dryer for gray hair in my opinion. The only thing that rivals it is the Dyson Airwrap, which I am also dying to buy.

There are two KEY things it does for women with gray hair:

It reduces dry time, which helps to keep my gray hair looking brilliant over brassy. And it also reduces extreme heat damage, which is important to me too.

Dyson explains, “The Dyson Supersonic is engineered to protect hair from extreme heat damage, with fast drying and controlled styling to help increase smoothness by 75%, increase shine by up to 132% and decrease frizz and flyaways by up to 61%.” And I’m here for all of THAT.

Is the Dyson hair dryer worth $400?

FIRST OF ALL, if anyone who tells you you NEED TO buy a $400 hair dryer, they are lying to you and themselves. No $400 hair dryer is “worth the money”…especially if you don’t have the money.

Does the Dyson hair dryer dry my hair faster? Yes.

Is the Dyson hair dryer easy to handle and pack? Yes.

Is the Dyson hair dryer helping to reduce hair damage? Yes.

Is the Dyson hair dryer awesome and cool and all the things? Yup.

Is the Dyson hair dryer worth $400? NO!

It’s like asking, Is a Bentley “worth the 200K”? If you have the money and value driving a Bentley then yes, I guess. If you don’t have the money, a Toyota Tercel will still get you from point A to point B, with a little left over for brunch and a mimosa.

If you are asking if the Dyson hair dryer is worth it to me personally? Now, that’s a different question. And yes, I’m obsessed and I’ll never use anything else. I sleep 10 feet away from it every night, I bring it with me wherever I travel, I get pissed when other people use it. Me and The Dyson Supersonic are like 2gether + 4ever = 6cess!

However, I will add, if you have thin hair or hair that dries easily or no hair at all, then it’s probably not worth it for you.

Yes! You can buy single attachments for $39.99 each.

Does the Dyson hair dryer come with a diffuser?

How much better is the Dyson Supersonic compared to other hair dryers?

If I had to put a number on it, I would say its 35% better than other hair dryers. Every time I blow dry, I save a few minutes but really the value for me is the reduced extreme heat damage over time.

How much does the Dyson hair dryer weigh?

About 1.2 pounds. There are other hair dryers on the market that weigh close to this one but Dyson says this hair dryer is “engineered for balance” and I can feel that. It’s not front heavy and doesn’t put pressure on my wrist because all the weight is balanced on top—like a lollipop shape instead of a pistol shape.

How loud is the Dyson Supersonic?

It’s not quiet by any means but I think it’s probably *a little* quieter than most. Some sources are quoting it at 75 decibels while others are saying 79…if you want to get technical. 😜

How is the Dyson hair dryer different from the Dyson Air Wrap?

They Dyson hair dryer operates like a standard hair dryer while the Dyson Air Wrap is dryer AND a styling tool with multiple styling attachments like barrels to curl or wave and brushes to smooth and volumize.
