It’s 2021, so we aren’t going to make a Fifty Shades of Style or Fifty Shades of Blush pun here (although we just did)—because Dakota Johnson is quickly cementing herself as a movie star, a red-carpet star, and an oversized-suit-jacket aficionado in her own right, no franchise necessary. Hitting festival after festival for her feature The Lost Daughter this year, Johnson rocked a bold mix of cuts in what is quickly becoming her signature look: expertly tailored contemporary neutrals.
Her hair was on point all year too. Johnson is firmly committed to long tresses, an expensive brunette tone, and the bold bangs that perfectly balance her face. Within this clear framework, Johnson was able to carve out her own niche of recognizable looks that’ll still work in a year or 10. Nothing flashy or avant-garde—just good old-fashioned style.
Here are her best looks from the year.

Vivien Killilea/Getty Images4/12Neutral SuitJohnson’s suit game is simply unmatched and an easy choice for a luncheon. Once again she manages to find loafers that add the right touch of class and comfort to a long day of press.
Stefanie Keenan/Getty Images5/12Satin JumpsuitWho else but D.J. would even think of a jumpsuit gown? It’s pants, it’s a dress, it’s a suit, it’s sexy, it’s everything. She is the queen of blush-colored looks. They are hers. She owns them.
Monica Schipper/Getty Images6/12Bustier With Leather PantsAnastasia Steele lives! It’s giving classy dominatrix vibes: the perfect mix of delicate, sexy, and sensible.
Robert Kamau/Getty Images7/12Check Blazer and Wide-Leg PantsThis is the picture that comes up when you google “off-duty actor.” (Well, it’s not, but it should be.) A seemingly casual fall look, tailored to perfection, with unfussy but stylish footwear and, obviously, a green juice and dark sunglasses. Props on the mask too!

Vivien Killilea/Getty Images9/12Red Satin Dress With ShacketThe absolute genius of this Telluride ensemble: a simple dress she knows will catch the wintry light, a Daisy Edgar-Jones–ish updo, a jacket that screams “designer,” and sensible footwear that you absolutely cannot find in just any old store.
Vivien Killilea/Getty Images10/12Suede Shacket With Wide-Leg Jeans and LoafersThe shacket makes another appearance as Johnson switches things up for daytime: mod glasses, trendy wide-leg jeans, and perfectly shiny boots say, “I could be running errands, but I’m obviously not.”
Barcroft Media/Getty Images11/12Sheer Shimmery GownShe upped her glam game for Venice but stuck with what she knows works: neutral tones and demure silhouettes.
